Only way to stop them was to pick early wickets: Powell after win vs SA

SA vs WI: Only way to stop them was to pick early wickets, says Rovman Powell after win vs South Africa

West Indies captain Rovman Powell said that they had to pick early wickets with the new ball to stop this strong South African team. West Indies beat South Africa by three wickets at Centurion to go 1-0 up in the three-match T20I series.

Speaking after the match, Powell said a lot of West Indies players are used to the T10 format and knew 130 is gettable as the ball flies here. South Africa posted 131/8 in 11 overs, which was chased down by West Indies with three wickets and three balls remaining.

“Had an honest talk with myself after the way I got out in the ODIs. A lot of guys in the team are used to the T10 format. The ball flies here and 130 is gettable,” said Powell.

He went on to say that it was important to pick wickets with the new ball as that was the only way to stop this strong South African team. West Indies dismissed Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram and Rilee Rossouw in the first four overs to peg the hosts back.

“A lot of shots we played, but there’s still a period where we have to push it around. Can’t always hit good international bowlers for 6 6 6. Have to do the basics well. Important to get wickets with the new ball – that’s the only way you’ll stop a strong South Africa line-up,” Powell added.

West Indies got off to a stupendous start in the T20I series after winning the opening match by three wickets at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. Rain threatened to play spoilsport, after which the game was curtailed to 11 overs per side.

South Africa put up 131/8 on the board after a quick-fire 48 by David Miller. In reply, Powell remained unbeaten on 43 runs off 18 balls to guide his side to a crucial three-wicket victory.
